I AM HAPPY, WITHOUT YOU

 Though I don’t have your embrace,

from a love I longed to find,
without the ties or gentle trace
of a heart you never made mine.

I’m happy across the distance,
watching you rise, free of fall;
though I don’t breathe your fragrance,
my heart still fills, over all.

For I am happy without holding you
through cold nights crowned with stars,
when the gray of the fading view
brings no sweetness to my scars.

I’m happy from afar,
gazing at an unchosen art;
and though my soul shows no mirror,
no wound lives in my heart.

I’m happy not to hurt you,
nor to seek you on the way;
though I don’t grasp each moment’s truth,
I know love brings no decay.

And I’m happy without you near,
I’m happy—without the tear.
